A/B/C/D grading system: how we classify the condition of every part

One of the biggest barriers to buying used spare parts is uncertainty about the real condition of the part. Will it work properly? Does it have hidden defects? To eliminate this uncertainty, at Rutapart we've developed a transparent grading system that classifies each part into four levels: A, B, C, and D.

Why a grading system?

In the world of used spare parts, the same part can be in very different conditions. An alternator might be practically new (with 20,000 km) or very worn (with 250,000 km). A bumper might have perfect color or be faded and scratched.

Without a standardized grading system, the buyer depends on subjective descriptions like "good condition," "well preserved," or "some defects." These descriptions don't offer concrete information and generate distrust.

Our A/B/C/D grading system establishes objective, measurable criteria for each level, so you know exactly what you're buying before you pay.

The four grades explained

Grade A: Excellent

A Grade A part is in excellent condition, both functionally and aesthetically. It's the best quality available in second-hand, equivalent to a near-new part.

Criteria for Grade A: - Functionality: 100% operational, optimal performance - Aesthetics: No visible defects (scratches, dents, discoloration) - Donor vehicle mileage: generally under 80,000 km - Donor vehicle age: generally under 5 years

Ideal for: Those seeking maximum quality who want the part to be visually perfect. Relatively new cars where a used part in perfect condition is the ideal solution.

Price: 50-60% of the price of a new original part.

Grade B: Good

A Grade B part works perfectly but has minor cosmetic defects that don't affect its performance.

Criteria for Grade B: - Functionality: 100% operational - Aesthetics: Minor cosmetic defects (surface scratches, small marks, slight discoloration) - Mileage: generally between 80,000 and 160,000 km - Cosmetic defects are documented with photos

Ideal for: Most buyers. Offers the best balance between quality and price. Cosmetic defects are minor and in many cases aren't visible once the part is installed.

Price: 35-45% of the price of a new part.

Grade C: Acceptable

A Grade C part works correctly but has visible defects, both cosmetic and from wear.

Criteria for Grade C: - Functionality: Operational, may have slightly reduced performance but within acceptable parameters - Aesthetics: Visible defects (deep scratches, minor dents, notable wear) - Mileage: generally between 160,000 and 250,000 km - Detailed description of all defects

Ideal for: Older cars where functionality is prioritized over aesthetics, budget repairs, or as a temporary part while searching for a better option.

Price: 20-30% of the price of a new part.

Grade D: For restoration

A Grade D part needs repair or restoration before it can be used normally. It's sold "as-is" for professionals or enthusiasts who have the skills or tools to restore it.

Criteria for Grade D: - Functionality: May require repair or reconditioning - Aesthetics: Significant defects - Sold on the premise that the buyer knows it needs work - Exhaustive description of condition and known issues

Ideal for: Restoration professionals, specialized workshops, mechanical DIY enthusiasts, or as a source of internal components.

Price: 10-20% of the price of a new part.

The grading process

Every part that enters Rutapart's catalog goes through a grading process performed by scrapyard professionals:

1. Visual inspection The technician examines the part under good lighting, documenting any cosmetic defects: scratches, dents, corrosion, discoloration, etc.

2. Functional test When possible, the part is tested before extraction from the donor vehicle. Alternators are measured with a multimeter, starter motors are tested, air conditioning compressors are verified.

3. Photographic documentation Each part is photographed from multiple angles, with special attention to any defects found. Defect photos are accompanied by a text description.

4. Donor data recording The source vehicle's data is recorded: make, model, year, mileage, and scrapping date. This data provides context about the part's previous use.

5. Grade assignment With all the collected information, the technician assigns a grade A, B, C, or D according to established criteria.

How to use the grading system to your advantage

1. If you're looking for maximum quality, filter by Grade A. You'll pay more than for other grades, but significantly less than for a new part. 2. If you're looking for the best value for money, Grade B is your ally. Cosmetic imperfections are minor and the savings are considerable. 3. If your priority is price, Grade C offers you functionality at minimal prices. 4. If you're a restoration professional, Grade D is a goldmine for finding base parts at rock-bottom prices.

Transparency above all

Rutapart's A/B/C/D grading system is based on a fundamental principle: total transparency. Every part comes with real photos, honest defect descriptions, donor vehicle data, and a grade that allows you to make an informed decision. If upon receiving the part you feel the grade doesn't match reality, you have 30 days to return it at no cost.
